Dr Stevie L. Lawrence II is a nationally recognized scholar and higher education leader who presently serves as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Winston-Salem State University. Prior to serving in this role, he was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting President at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri.
As a higher education leader, Dr. Lawrence has held several leadership roles which also include serving as Vice President for Postsecondary Education at the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). In this role, he led student success and higher education policy development throughout a 16-state region. Prior to serving in this role, he spent a considerable amount of time at Fort Valley State University, where he served in several capacities, such as Interim Vice Provost for Student Success and Enrollment Management, Dean of the University College, and Executive Director for the Center for Retention Services.
Other experiences include leadership roles as Director of College Success Services at the University of North Carolina System Office, along with other opportunities at Virginia Union and Shaw Universities. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications focused on student success and the black college experience.
Lawrence earned his undergraduate degree in history from North Carolina A&T State University; a master’s in public administration from North Carolina Central University and a Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University. He has also held several prestigious fellowships, namely the American Council on Education (A.C.E.) Fellows Program, and was selected as a Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI) Protégé with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
